Walk MS: Believe That You Can Help

While Multiple Sclerosis (MS) fundraising is not specifically a Dharma project, it is a very worthy one. I am sharing information about this MS project because you may know someone who has it, and it has affected people near and dear to me.

MS is an inflammatory auto-immune disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells (called myelin sheaths) in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. This damage diminishes the ability of areas of the nervous system to communicate, resulting in a wide variety of both physical and mental symptoms. MS can occur in isolated attacks (relapsing form) or can develop over time (progressive form). Between attacks, symptoms may subside entirely. However, permanent neurological problems can occur as the disease progresses (NMSS, 2014).

"What do dietary salt, adult stem cells and gut bacteria have in common? They are among the new leads being explored to move us closer to a world free of MS. The new research projects and training awards are part of a comprehensive research strategy aimed at stopping MS, restoring function that has been lost, and ending the disease forever – for every single person with MS" (NMSS, 2014).

Walk MS is the signature fundraising event of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. By participating in the Walk, you will share a remarkable achievement with over 250,000 other walkers in more than 700 cities across the US. But most importantly, you will be making a difference by raising essential funds for research and services for people with MS (Walk MS, 2014).

Walk MS connects people living with MS and those who care about them. It is an experience unlike any other: a day to come together, to celebrate the progress that has been made, and to show the power of connections.

When you participate in Walk MS, the funds you donate and raise give hope to the more than 2.3 million people worldwide with MS. The funds raised support life-changing programs and cutting-edge research. Every connection counts (Walk MS, 2014).
